Amid COVID-19: MKAN holds 162 online classes for WAEC Candidates

Bro Taoheed Oladele

To cushion the effect of the novel COVID-19 pandemic on the students, especially the SSS three who are preparing for the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) examinations, Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Organization (Majlis Khuddam-ul-Ahmadiyya, Nigeria) has held a total of 162 online classes for various students across the three departments – science, arts/humanity and commercial.

The virtual learning platform was the idea of Sadr Majlis Khuddam-ul-Ahmadiyya, Engr Aina Saeed and being implemented by the office MKAN Isha’at (media and publicity) and Umur-e-Talaba (Student Affairs).

The Organization used Google Classroom application primarily and WhatsApp as platforms for the learning arrangement between the tutors and the students.

Specifically, a total of 75 students including 8 Christians and 13 teachers of high pedigree participated in the exercise. Among the teachers, we saw some who had more than ten years’ experience, while some also had at least five years’ experience as some registered as tutors owing to the passion and love they have for inculcating knowledge, moral values and ethics into younger generations.

Among the subjects taught during the online classes include Mathematics, English, Biology, Economics, Physics, Chemistry, Islamic Studies, Financial Accounting, Commerce, Literature-in-English and Government.

Moreover, the science and arts/humanity students had not less than 12 classes every week on Google Classroom, while commercial students had three classes per week as well on WhatsApp spanning through the six weeks of rigorous learning exercises. The classes still continue as long as the stay-at-home directives given by the government last during this novel pandemic in the country.

Meanwhile, to motivate students to take full benefit of the initiative, a student from each department who attend classes, complete assignments and have average assignment scores are being given incentives to aid their learning.

From the feedbacks got from the students, the online classes organized by MKAN were a big opportunity for them to continue their studies for the WASSCE despite the lockdown.

Besides, some rained eulogies on the organizer for deeming it fit to arrange such learning classes at this critical time when the education sector and others have been grounded.

Meanwhile, according to Muhtamin Isha’at, Bro. Rotimi Ismail, who is acting as a check on all the classes, the classes are going on smoothly as students irrespective of ethnic or religious background participated effectively in the learning process.
