Apata Ahmadi youths organises monthly public lecture, justifies Jesus and Mahdi as the same person

Ahmadi Muslim Youths Organisation (Majlis Khuddam-ul-Ahmadiyya) Apata District have staged monthly public lecture to Justify Jesus (as) and Mahdi (as) as the same person, held behind Brent Shopping Mall, Dogo, Apata, Ibadan on 7th February, 2020.

The Lecture, “Hazrat Eesa(as) and The Mahdi(as) are the same”, was delivered by the MKA Apata District Taleem Secretary, Hustaz Akinyemi Sherrif, tacked on clarifying the wrong notions, misconceptions of some Muslims and Non-Muslims about the advent of the Promised Messiah(as).

Contrary to the beliefs of mainstream modern Sunni & Shia school of thought in Islam, the Ahmadi Muslims believe that the prophecies about the Promised Messiah and Imam Mahdi in Islam were fulfilled by one person. Most Sunnis & Shias of today believe that they will be two separate personalities. Following are some of the reasons and arguments presented by the Ahmadi Muslims for their belief that these prophecies refer to the coming of one individual, not two separate religious leaders.

Firstly, the first argument given by Ahmadi Muslims is that Imam Mahdi is a title given to the coming Messiah and not a separate person. In the Holy Quran, Allah has referred the term ‘Imam’ & ‘Mahdi’ to all Prophets of God. Since Hazrat Isa (as) is also a Prophet of Allah, the wordings of ‘Imam Mahdi’ is only used as his title and do not represent a separate personality. For example, after mentioning different Prophets of Allah in Surah Anbiya in the Holy Quran, Allah says,

And We made them leaders who guided people by Our command, and We sent revelation to them enjoining the doing of good works, and the observing of Prayer, and the giving of alms. And they were worshippers of Us alone.” (Al Quran 21:74)

Apparently, here Allah has referred to many Prophets of Allah as both ‘Imam’ & ‘Mahdi’ (someone who guides people by Allah’s command). This is the principle of the Holy Quran that the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community presents to make their case that ‘Imam Mahdi’ is merely a title of Prophet Isa (as) upon his second return. He does not represent a separate personage.

We also find this in the ahadith of our Master, Rasulullah Muhammad (saw), that he used the word ‘Mahdi’ as a title for other persons of this Ummah as well. For example, he said about his Caliphs, as is recorded in Hadith books like Abu Dawud & Tirmizi:

“That it’s incumbent upon you to follow my Sunnah and the Sunnah of my rightly guided successors. Here Rasulullah (sa) has referred to his successors and caliphs as Mahdi (the guided one). This further proves the point that the word ‘Mahdi’ is merely a title used for righteous servants of Allah.”

The lecturer also buttressed his points tacking on the declaration of our noble master(saw) that,

‘there will be no Mahdi except Hazrat Isa (as).’- (Ibn Maja –kitab-ul-fitan).

Correlating to the latter, he also declared that, Hazrat Isa (as) is the Imam Mahdi of this Ummah. He said:

Whosoever lives from among you shall meet Isa, son of Mary who is Imam, Mahdi, Arbiter and Judge.” (Musnad Ahmad bin Hanbal, Vol. 2, p. 411)

We also have further ahadith in which the Holy Prophet (saw) has mentioned his own coming and the coming of the Messiah as the two biggest events of this Ummah. No mention has been made of a separate Imam Mahdi which proves that the Messiah and Imam Mahdi refer to one person. For example:

“That Ummah can never die which has me at one end, and the Messiah, son of Mary, at the other.” (Ibn Maja)

Furthermore, we find in Islam that Muslims can only have one leader at one time. For example, we find the following hadith: The Prophet (saw) said:

When the oath of allegiance has been taken for two Caliphs, kill the latter of them.” [Muslim]

Now if the modern Sunni or Shia version is accepted, it will become incumbent upon Muslims to kill one of either Prophet Isa (as) or the Imam Mahdi because in ahadith, we see that both of them have been referred to as leaders of the Muslim Ummah.

Some Sunnis try to argue that this is not the case because the Imam Mahdi will be the real Imam and Prophet Isa (as) will only be a follower. However, this isn’t correct because in the ahadith of Rasulullah (sa), we see that he has used such words for Prophet Isa (as) like (Just leader) and (Just judge). Thus both of them have been termed as leader of Muslims and one of them must be killed (if the Sunni & shia interpretation of this matter is accepted).

The Ahmadi Muslims of course understand that these are titles given to one person who will be the Mahdi and the Messiah from the Ummah of Rasulullah (sa).

The Holy Quran and the ahadith of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (sa) clearly demonstrate that the term ‘Imam Mahdi’ is a title which is used for righteous servants and Prophets of God. Similar is the case in Islam that this has been used as a title of the coming Messiah and does not refer to a separate personality. We do understand that there are a few ahadith which mention the coming of a Mahdi who is a separate person from the Messiah. These ahadith are mostly weak and non-reliable.

Lastly, in accordance to the prophecies of the Holy Prophet(saw), the Messiah and Mahdi has come in the person of Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (as) of Qadian, India (1835 – 1908). It is the duty of every Muslim to accept him as was the command of Rasulullah (sa) and join his renaissance of Islam.

In attendance at the lecture were 5 Ahmadi Male elders (Ansarullah), 13 Ahmadi youths (Majlis Khuddam), 2 Ahmadi women (Lajnah Imailla) and 8 Non-Ahmadis(Male & Female)

Among the dignitaries include; Apata Circuit Vice President, Bro Taofeek Hadi; Apata Jamaat President, Alh. Iskil Adeyemi; Chief Tefsir Apata Central Mosque, Alh. Ibraheem Akilapa; Aare Musulumi of Apata, Alh. Moshood, among others.
